MQ-9 Reaper: Unfettered for Export

December 1/21: Netherland General Atomics won a $10.4 million modification for the Netherlands MQ-9 update. MQ-9A Block 5 has endurance of over 27 hours, speeds of 240 KTAS and can operate up to 50,000 feet. It has a 3,850 pound payload capacity that includes 3,000 pounds (1,361 kg) of external stores. Work will take place in California. Estimated completion date is December 31, 2021.

The MQ-9 Reaper UAV, once called “Predator B,” is somewhat similar to the famous Predator. Until you look at the tail. Or its size. Or its weapons. It’s called “Reaper” for a reason: while it packs the same surveillance gear, it’s much more of a hunter-killer design. Some have called it the first fielded Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV).
