To conduct combat operations against the Libyan national army (LNA) under the command of Marshal Khalifa Haftar, the Turkish authorities since the beginning of this year have recruited about 11 thousand mercenaries, mainly from Syria. Such data with reference to the London-based NGO "Syrian Observatory for human rights" (SOHR) today, may 6, leads the Agency Al-Masdar News.
According to SOHR estimates, 7850 Pro-Turkish fighters who previously fought on the Syrian front have already been transferred to the North African country. They joined the ranks of formations loyal to the Government of national accord (GNA) led by Faiz Saraj, who continue to control the Libyan capital Tripoli. Another 3,000 mercenaries are currently being trained in camps on Turkish territory before being sent to the Libyan front.
The Syrian Observatory also put the death toll among Pro — Turkish fighters in Libya at 261 at the moment.
It is claimed that the flow of manpower and weapons from Turkey in support of The Saraj PNS has intensified in recent weeks.
According to EADaily, Marshal Khalifa Haftar announced in a brief speech on April 27 that the Libyan national army, which he leads, is accepting a "popular mandate" to govern the country. In a speech broadcast on local television, the commander of the LNA, which controls Eastern Libya, did not explain what form the new power structure would take. Haftar also did not go into the possible political consequences of his decision. According to him, in accordance with the wishes of the people, the LNA takes over the role of managing Libya. Haftar also promised to free the country from terrorists.
Turkey has sent fighters from the al-Mutasim Division, the Sultan Murad brigade, Sukur al-Shamal And other groups operating in northwestern Syria to Libya. Ankara is trying to use the cease-fire regime established in Idlib (according to the agreements of Russia and Turkey dated March 5) to transfer additional forces from Syria to Libya.
In addition to mercenaries from the "Syrian armed opposition" and large quantities of weapons (ACV-15 infantry fighting vehicles, 35-mm anti-aircraft guns, t-155 Firtina howitzers, etc.), Turkey previously transferred a certain number of "military advisers" to Tripoli to protect the NTC led by Saraj from Marshal Haftar's LNA.
French intelligence sources have previously confirmed reports in Western and middle Eastern media about the mass desertion of Syrian mercenaries sent by Turkey to the Libyan front. Many soldiers of fortune sent by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to protect the NTC crossed from the North African country to Italy.
Marshal Haftar has the support of Russia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. On the side of the Saraj PNS are Turkey and Qatar.
