Turkey threatens Greece over asylum for pilot

Greece’s decision to grant asylum to a Turkish officer accused of helping to orchestrate an abortive coup in 2016 has been severely criticised by Turkey’s deputy prime minister.
The spat threatens to sink relations between the two Nato partners to their lowest point in decades. Hakan Cavusoglou said that the decision was like “dynamite that could explode”, leaving Greece destroyed.
Ankara says that the pilot, Suleyman Ozkayakci, played a key role in mobilising a faction of Turkey’s forces to overthrow the government and assassinate President Erdogan. He fled to Greece with seven other servicemen. Alexis Tsipras, the Greek prime minister, sensing the tensions, has ordered his government to overturn a decision by the country’s asylum board giving the pilot refuge. He wants the servicemen to…
