Significant intervention by the Honorary Chief of Hellenic General Staff Fragoulis S. Fragos Ret. General for the revision of Article 21 of the Constitution, concerning the Demographic Problem

Dear Friends,

Instead of wishes these holy days and given the total indifference shown for one of the most significant challenges faced by our homeland, that of our demographic situation, with the considerable decline in births vs. deaths leading to the possible reduction in the Greek population to just 3 million by 2100 (the relevant speech of the Retired General, Honorary Chief of Hellenic Army General Staff can be found on the website “The Audience of Greeks All Over the World” using the following link: http://greece4greeks.blogspot.gr/2017/10/10_15.html), I suggest you devote some of your precious time and attention to the document that is posted there and the proposal to review and amend article 21 of the Greek Constitution.

The severity and urgency of our demographic problem is clearly depicted in the following two tables produced by ELSTAT, showing the decline in the number of births. The situation can of course by reversed if young Greek couples decide to have even one child, something which as a result of the economic crisis intensified by the repeated Memorandums has become increasingly unviable. However, were this to happen, the Greek population would rise by 10%.

 In reference to these tables, it is worth highlighting that in 2015 there were 29,368 more deaths (121,212 in total) than births (91,847 in total) and in 2016, 25,894 more deaths (118,792 in total) than births (92,898 in total).  Finally, in 2017, through November 28^th, this number rose again, with deaths outpaced births by 31,397 (113,247 vs. 81,850).

My fellow Greeks,

This demographic problem is the most significant issue faced by our homeland the past several decades. The severity of this problem, having escaped the attention of the state (you will judge whether intentionally or not), has been augmented by the enduring economic crisis and the intensification of the refugee crisis starting in early 2015.

As such, I suggest you devote some of your precious time and attention to the document that is posted there and to the proposal to review and potentially amend article 21 of the Greek Constitution.

It is recommended that paragraphs 4 and 5 are added to article 21 of the Constitution with the explicit wording that they be strictly adhered to and cannot be reviewed by governments with ideologies that don’t align with the principles and values that seek the rescue and preservation of the Christian nation of Greece!

•        The creation of a special Family Aid Fund, that will cover certain expenses from birth until adulthood in proportion to the number of children, to be overseen by the Church, this national benefactor that unfortunately no longer receives even the public funds due to it. 

•        Special aid for children born in Thrace and the islands bordering our neighbors in accordance with the plans of the late Archbishop Christodoulos.

Friends, during this crucial time for our country, which is being challenged on all fronts, we must protect the birth of Greek families by constitutional means.  Should we fail to do so, the “downfall” of our country will occur from within.

Εξοχότατε κ. Πρόεδρε,

Με αυτή την επιστολή θέλουμε να εκφράσουμε την αγωνία μας για ένα θέμα το οποίο χρονίζει για πάνω από δυο δεκαετίες, όπως όμως αντιλαμβανόμαστε επίκειται να «κλείσει» σε μερικούς μήνες. Πρόκειται για την ονομασία της γειτονικής χώρας των Σκοπίων.
