Hundreds of people remain trapped in a steel plant in Ukraine's Mariupol city, despite some managing to leave on Sunday, a Ukrainian officer there says.

The Azovstal plant, the last stronghold of Ukrainian resistance in the southern port city, has been under intense Russian bombardment for weeks.

National Guard commander Denys Shlega said while some civilians had been evacuated, hundreds still remained.

He also said Russian forces said resumed heavy shelling of the area.
