There were 4 times more Greeks living in the Ottoman empire than in Greece itself.

The Greek majority island of Crete had long desired to be incorperated into Greece, and many were willing to give their life for it. In total the island of Crete saw 7 revolts !

In 1897 the island had yet another revolt. The great powers (France, Britain, Russia etc) sended an international fleet to maintain peace.

Greece sended help to aid their Cretan brothers and Colonel Timeleon Vassos declared unification with Greece.

The great powers reacted by demanding that Greece would stop in return for Cretan autonomy. The demand was rejected.

The Ottomans declared war on Greece on 18 april 1897. As a reaction to all these events.
